Flor & Dave's Wedding: Friday April 5, 2024 in Austin, TX
The Wedding
… And the eclipse on Monday April 8
We are comboing the wedding with the total eclipse that’s going to envelop the Austin area in the early afternoon of Monday, April 8. We understand this makes travel and lodging a little trickier but hopefully it’ll also make a memorable visit. Current headcount for the 8th: 13.
The worst travel days will be Friday April 5 and Monday April 8, so check your options. Flying in on Wednesday the 3rd and leaving Sunday the 7th or Tuesday the 9th looks to be the most economical. We also recommend looking at both flights.google.com and iflyswa.com (SWA doesn’t show up on many flight aggregators and does not charge for schedule changes).
We’ve also heard that Amtrak and Grayhound are not as affected by the inflated eclipse airline prices. (Flying into San Antonio is no help.) If you’re renting a car or a booking a Turo, consider getting a hotel north, south, or east of Austin in one of the smaller towns that won’t be experiencing a big eclipse rush (the eclipse is centered west of town). Some suggestions: Manor, Pflugerville, Buda, Kyle, Round Rock. All of these towns are 30-45 minutes’ drive from the wedding venue. Avoiding car rental can save you some bucks too. And you can also borrow Dave’s car (contact Doug to arrange).
Note that we do have some free and low-cost accommodations already arranged for you to make this easier, so please make sure to contact Doug now (above) if you want to claim one of these spots.
The Wedding Day Schedule (Fri Apr 5)
Dress code: nice but not black-tie. No t-shirts but nice shorts are okay if it’s hot. The ground may be soft so avoid heels. If you feel sick, please stay home. If you recently had contact with COVID, we sympathize and ask that you please wear a mask; there will be vulnerable people in attendance.
The wedding is kid-friendly! Kind of. Please try to limit disruptions, of course, and there’ll be some adult lyrics during karaoke. We’ll try to keep that for the 7-9pm hours, but we can’t make any guarantees.
Th April 4 – You are invited to join us for a casual dinner at Central Market Cafe! It’s the rightmost part (south side) of the establishment facing the patio. We’re inviting everyone. We’ll be upstairs on the balcony area at 7p-ish. https://maps.app.goo.gl/TgsmSxS6Y7JYKtk68
Fri April 5 – Evening wedding at Zilker Botanical Garden‘ Oak Grove 4p until 9p. Plentiful parking at 2220 Barton Springs Road in the heart of Austin. When you arrive, ask for Oak Grove or just head to the southwest side of the gardens kinda about here. Parking and admission are free; just ask the attendant for Oak Grove wedding directions. Menu will be catered tacos on homemade tortillas with several meat and veggie options, plus three kinds of aguas frescas with optional alcohol, plus some surprises. Various performances up to the maximum tolerance of the assembled. Some dancing. Then there will be judgment-free karaoke.
Sat April 6 – Come to our BYOB hangout in Dave’s yard! 4p until whenever at 4511 Speedway, about 4 miles north of downtown. The wifi is “Cbn” or “Cbn-main” and the password is “cabingetaway” for both. We’ll have some starter food and drink, and the plan is to put up a screen, goof off, celebrate. Bring an instrument if you like; there will surely be music. Forecast looks good, 81F to 60F.
Sun April 7 – Eclipse day 1. In the late morning, we’ll drive out to and camp out at Long’s Fishing Camp, a magical and remote spot about an hour west of Austin, right on banks of the Llano River. If you need help obtaining camping gear, let Doug know (see top of page). Click the Eclipse button below to see the current headcount for this event.
Mon April 8 – Observe the total eclipse at Eagle Rock, an overlook in the Llano River walking distance (waist-high wading) from Long’s. Forecast is for clouds and thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening, hopefully after the solar fireworks.

Registry
We are registered at Zola at the link below. We wouldn’t ask you to buy some trendy crap that we wouldn’t buy ourselves. We’re adding more stuff as we think of it. Sorry!
You know what’s not on the registry but is of immense value to us? Your help with hosting visitors or loaning camping gear. Check it out when you RSVP.
Also, we’re looking for connections. Specifically, we’d appreciate it if you can introduce us to people you know who are:
- decisionmakers who need help getting more customers (aka SEO and digital marketing services)
- decisionmakers who need software, app, and website testing help
- influencers who can help publicize our speculative fiction publication and the free videogame for mobile phones that we’re working on
- decisionmakers interested in patenting some ideas to change the way we make HVAC and refrigeration appliances
- and of course, irresponsible investors or connectors who want to collaborate on moviemaking and creative fun.
We are humbled and grateful for those who’ve expressed interest in getting this new phase of our lives jump-started.
We’re mostly focused on throwing a good party with you in attendance. (Pic: Flor and Dave’s campsite on the Guadalupe in Canyon Lake)
Our Wedding Hashtag
Forgive us, but we have a social media hashtag for the wedding so we can find all your amazing photos and videos. Flor’s daughter Becca has declared that the hashtag to use is…

Eclipse Plans and Free/Low-Cost Lodging
Flights might be expensive, but what if you can stay in comfort in Austin, free? Oh right – don’t forget to buy eclipse glasses. They’re a couple bucks from your local observatory or university. Get eclipse glasses free using our tips on the eclipse page!
About Flor
Flor is an amazing, energetic, hard-working, resilient, and unreasonably positive human being. A proud mom, she just recently changed jobs from Child Protective Services case worker (determining child safety and providing resources to parents so they are able to keep their children in their care) to case specialist for World Relief, a refugee aid non-profit.
Because of her work, Flor has serious drugdar. She knows if someone has an addiction. She won’t say this, but straight talk: her work has saved lives. She was born in Mexico and lived most of her life in West Texas and Memphis.
Flor won a CPS Outstanding Case Worker Award in 2019 from Life in Focus Education, a 2020 Outstanding Caseworker Award from the State of Texas, and a 2023 Unmatched Dedication award from the Miracle Foundation. She was also awarded the Immaculate Heart of Mary Award in 2013, the “MVP of the year” recognition spanning the entire 21-county Catholic Diocese of Memphis. She got her double-major BA in 2016 magna cum laude. Does that timing seem remarkable to you? And I mentioned the mom part, right?
Some of the odd things that Flor has described as “fun!” include:
- brutal workouts
- painting over graffiti while being savaged by mosquitoes
- insulating plumbing under the house in 45 degree weather
- cleaning
- cooking pretty much anything
- being pushed out of her comfort zone
